Keeping Up With The Wellness Dimensions: Emotional Wellness

Being emotionally well is more than just being able to handle your stress. It also involves being attentive to your thoughts, feelings and behaviors: whether positive or negative. Emotional Wellness implies the ability to be aware of and accept our feelings, rather than deny them. Have an optimistic approach to life, and enjoy life despite its occasional disappointments and frustrations. The goal of being emotionally well is to have a positive attitude, high self-esteem, a strong sense of self and the ability to recognize and share a wide range of feelings with others in a constructive way.

Emotional health is an important part of keeping the mind healthy and engaged. The body goes through many changes throughout the aging process. As one ages , arthritis and other chronic pain settles in more easily. Learning to cope with conditions that wear on the body can be difficult. The mind can be at risk of depression, anxiety or allowing oneself to become sedentary from pain. Emotional wellness also includes the ability to learn and grow from experiences. Emotional well-being encourages autonomy and proper decision making skills. It too, is an important part of overall wellness.

To keep a strong and confident mind, join an exercise class or partake in volunteering. Movement and exercise can be a great way of dealing with depression, anxiety or lessen the pain of arthritis. As you become socially involved in a group, you will feel a sense of worth and gain lifelong friendships and memories with others who may be suffering as well. In return , you are also helping to decrease the psychological issues of aging.
